Knowledge saves lives and property at hospitals
There are about 9,000 fires at Swedish businesses and in the public sector every year. More than half of these are put out by the organization’s own personnel before any serious damage is caused. Securitas offers a Basic Fire Skills course aimed at all personnel to teach them the necessary action they need to take and how to use fire protection equipment correctly.
A Basic Fire Skills course led by Securitas was held at Stockholm’s Södersjukhuset hospital for the second consecutive year in May 2010. Staff received information about what to do in the event of a fire and were then tested on extinguishing ravaging fires and burning dummies in hospital beds and wheelchairs.
“Hopefully, our personnel will never need to use these skills, but the course is designed to be an eye-opener so that they will feel more confident if anything were to happen,” says Peter Claeson, Head of Security.
Basic skills in fire protection provide better conditions for protecting a business and it is essential that all employees get to practice how to handle an accident once it occurs. There is no time for reflection when a fire breaks out – you need to act quickly following the routines you have been taught.
“We previously used suppliers working exclusively with fire-protection, but I felt that we should do something different and I contacted Securitas. I am still very happy with my decision,” says Peter.
In addition to Basic Fire Skills, Securitas also offers courses in D-HLR (handling defibrillators), CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and training courses for facility managers. You can also buy fire extinguishers from Securitas and have Securitas conduct evacuation exercises, annual fire equipment service inspections and systematic fire-prevention activities.
