Secure Care for VieCuri Medical Centre
From control centre and car park management to hospitality and even support for air ambulances – for two years now the VieCuri Medical Centre for North-Limburg has been working with a permanent team of specialist healthcare security officers from Securitas. Care of the patient comes first at all times.
With bases in Venlo and Venray, about 130 specialists, 570 beds and 2,500 employees, VieCuri is a sizeable institution used by a large number of people every day. So naturally there are risks. The cooperation between the hospital and Securitas has been fruitful. “Securitas’ project “Veiligezorg®” has improved cooperation between doctors, nursing staff and the police. There has been a considerable fall in the number of violent incidents in recent years. The cost of damages has also fallen substantially, and my colleagues feel far safer,” says Ton Heerschop, Head of Security and Environment.
A Welcome Presence
Securitas’ security officers have received specialist Healthcare Security Officer training. They understand and speak the language of the care sector, and have been trained to handle emotional situations. At the same time they also have to intervene if the boundary – verbal or physical violence – is crossed. Heerschop explains, “The atmosphere in a hospital is deeply affected by the security guards who patrol it. Medical staff can do a lot to ensure that emotions do not build up. But when things do nevertheless happen, it’s good to know that there are professional security guards there beside you.”
Safe Landing and Parking
Securitas healthcare security officers have also been trained as Helicopter Landing Officers, which allows them to assist with the landing of air ambulances. They also assist in keeping the car park secure. Heerschop explains, “Three of our employees have been trained up by Securitas as car park supervisors and can now assist with problems in the car park as well as in the hospital. They are controlled by Securitas’ head security guard in a subsidiary team. Together with the healthcare security guards from Securitas they form a recognisable team that successfully contributes to the security within VieCuri.”
