Securitas Arrives in the Gare du Nord Train Station in Paris

Gare du Nord is the first European train station and third in the world with 180 millions of travellers a year. Security issues are as huge as the station. Since January 2007, the French railway national company, SNCF, has chosen Securitas as its security provider.

“We desired to appeal a company that has a real know-how in security and the competence to manage lots of employees”, explain Thierry Hoin, local safety representative at the Gare du Nord.

At the Gare du Nord, 200 security guards are take turns 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Their duties conduct them in the three parts of the station: Eurostar zone, national trains zone and suburban trains and underground zone. Objective of the service provision: make the 80 000 m² of the station safe for the 500,000 daily travellers, the 1,000 SNCF employees and the 3,000 people who work each day on the site.

Work Together: the Key to Success

“Since Securitas arrived, we’ve seen the quality of the service getting better. We appreciate proximity and reactivity from the staff. Reactivity is essential in a station. Days are following one to each other but never look the same. We absolutely need a security provider who is able to modify its device immediately...and Securitas knows how to do that. I feel that there is management and professionalism”, precise Thierry Hoin.

Securitas is involved in the general security and safety of the Gare du Nord.

“Each month, we plan meetings with all the security suppliers at the station (Police, SNCF, Securitas). It’s a good opportunity to talk about current issues and actions. Each quarter we organize a follow-up committee with Securitas branch and a running committee is held each semester. During those two meetings, we are in charge of checking the right execution of the contract”, explain Thierry Hoin. Thanks to this team work and experience sharing, security operations are shared.

For dog handlers, SNCF gives the opportunity for trainings with their dogs on real material (trains) at the Landy depot. Thanks to that, dogs can increase their detection capacity in railway environment.
