Monitoring cuts crime for top Yorkshire haulage company

Ongoing theft problems faced by a leading Yorkshire freight company have been solved following the installation of an IP-based security system incorporating intruder detection, CCTV and speakers.

The system was installed by WRS Solutions with the help of Securitas-Alert Services, which now provides a full out-of-hours monitoring and keyholding response service at the secured site.

The haulage company, which operates from a depot in South Yorkshire and a remote office some miles away, had been targeted repeatedly by thieves looking to steal diesel. With the cost of fuel rising the criminals had been attracted to steal diesel directly from vehicles and also from the storage tanks at the depot.

The remotely located compound is surrounded by open fields and is adjacent to an industrial estate which is unoccupied at night, so it was proving difficult to secure with just traditional measures such as physical perimeter protection.

The advanced monitored security solution, provided by WRS Solutions and Securitas-Alert Services, comprises a network of active infrared detectors around the perimeter and at key target areas within the depot, and an 8-camera CCTV system with VMD (Video Motion Detection) capability.

WRS Solutions’ security consultant Jim Dixon – himself a former senior police officer and industrial security manager – explains that the solution that his company developed in partnership with Securitas Alert Services has proved both effective and affordable.

“Since the monitored security system went live the crime problem at the site has been solved, and a number of attempted thefts have been prevented,” he says. “The system works very well, and there have been no further losses.”

With control room operators able to quickly confirm if an attack is taking place, both the police and first-response security patrols can be called. For the haulage company a keyholding and rapid response service is also provided by Securitas-Alert, to ensure that any attempted attack fails and that the site remains secure afterwards.
As a further deterrent, control room operators can warn-off would-be thieves using the public address speakers which are also integrated into the system.

“The service we’ve provided in partnership with Securitas-Alert Services has given our client exactly the ‘active’ security protection that they were looking for,” comments Jim Dixon of WRS.

“They wanted a solution that prevents losses and really safeguards their vehicles and other assets. The company has told us they now have the reassurance that their business is well protected.”
