A Highly Visible Security Staff Keeps Shopping Safe

“I use Securitas because they are a well run company headed up by dedicated professionals who understand our business,” says Vornado Realty Trust’s Jim Staveley. “You don’t have to teach them the real estate business – they know how important it is that customers feel safe.”

Staveley is a regional general manager for the New York real estate giant and specifically oversees five shopping malls in the metropolitan area.  His portfolio includes:  Green Acres Mall, a 200-store center in Valley Stream on Long Island, just east of the Queens’ border; and Brooklyn’s Kings Plaza Mall, which boasts 150 shops and restaurants.

Securitas officers are responsible for all security services – from vehicle patrols of the perimeters and parking structures to a providing a highly visible interior presence.  “If you see security around, you feel more comfortable,” notes Staveley.  Patrols continue after shops close to provide 24/7 coverage every day of the year.  Additionally, officers provide additional services such as escorts to the parking garage and assistance with packages.  They have even helped forgetful shoppers find their cars.

Vornado’s malls attract an audience that reflects the dynamics of their New York locations.  “At an urban property, your guards have to be especially alert given the sheer number of people crossing your threshold every day,” says Staveley.  “You are dealing with a lot of people as well as a number of diverse backgrounds.”

Vornado has been using Securitas since 2002.  Staveley particularly appreciates being able to reach his account manager “instantaneously” and the team’s proactive approach.  Officers routinely bring to his staffs’ attention safety and security issues before they become problems, preventing not only injuries or property loss, but potential liabilities as well.

“Securitas gets it from both a business and ownership perspective and that’s what is different,” he says. “They have a partnership approach and make sure the properties are run to the best of our shared abilities.”

He also touts the benefits of contracting out security.  His officers arrive fully and thoroughly trained and he doesn’t have to worry about coverage.  His account manager is there to make certain that if officer calls out sick, Securitas will provide an ably trained replacement.  “I know they are going to be very focused on doing the best job possible, and that’s what they are delivering.”

Securitas keeps Staveley up to date on security issues through a web based incident reporting system that tracks each incident in his retail portfolio and provides detailed current and historical security information.  “I can see trends as they are happening or spot potential trends.  They keep me informed and nothing comes as a surprise,” he says.  “And that’s important.  When I hire general managers to run the mall I say the same thing:  make sure we know about any issues in advance; let nothing come as a surprise.”
